Dear Alum,
The value of an education at the University of Oregon is more than just about the academics. But the value of a UO degree is all about academic reputation. The value of your degree fluctuates with the reputation of the institution.
The current UO administration is in the process of shifting funds from the academic mission of the university to other secondary, and largely administrative operations. They are eroding the ability of the university to attract and retain the best faculty by offering below-inflation raises and salaries among the lowest of our academic peers.
If you’ve seen UO’s new Oregon Rising campaign, it is an ambitious vision for the future—one which we heartily support, but also one which requires investment in faculty. The Oregon Rising goals and benchmarks are dependent on UO attracting and retaining the best faculty. There is simply no other way. Right now, the administration’s aspirations are not in alignment with their spending priorities. We support those aspirations, but they are going to be achieved by meeting the needs of faculty and students, not administrators.
Ambitious goals cannot just be rhetoric; resources are necessary.
Please support UO faculty as we fight for the academic future of the institution. Let the administration know that the value of your degree is at stake.
